Paul’s work is inspired by nature and landscapes and embraces contrasts of control and chance within the making process. Textures that manifest naturally on surfaces within diverse urban and rural landscapes, are fundamental to his practice and he expresses his relationship to these through the coil-built sculptural vessel form and glazed surface. It is the correlation between the slower emerging cycles of nature and the making process leading to alchemical developments within the kiln that underpins his work.
All the vessels shown below are in stoneware with multiple oxidised slips and glazes. Please click on an image to see it more closely in a slide show. We ship worldwide and charge delivery and packing at cost. Any enquiries please call 01308 459511 or email email@example.com.
My treatment of the glazed surface renders evidence of brush marks and the chemical reactions of the glaze materials. The surface is built up and transformed through the application of multiple layers of slips and glazes. The pressure, direction and speed of the brush connecting with the vessel’s surface determines only some of the outcome. My perception of the surface and what is revealed is continually challenged as layers dry rapidly upon powdery residual layers of glaze. Once applied the glaze materials are set to react within the conditions of the oxidised firing process. Here the inclusion of volatile materials brings further disruption to the surface through blistering, cratering and crawling.
